Commissioned by the Municipality of Leiden, QuickWorks produced a research documentary on the city’s colonial and slavery past. The film was developed for the special ceremony on December 2 in the Stadsgehoorzaal, where the municipality officially apologized for the role of previous city governments in colonialism and slavery.
Together with researchers Emma Sow and Sjoerd Ramackers, we brought historical insights to life by connecting their stories to locations that are still visible in the city. During an intensive filming day, we filmed at various historic sites in Leiden and translated extensive research into an accessible and respectful documentary. The result is a film that brings together history, context and social significance in a way that fits the importance of the moment.
